Owner of the EF Marina, Martin, said you bow fisherman can come shoot all the gar you want! Please do, there's way too many of the nasty things there. Went to throw for shad last night and kept getting huge balls of gar eggs in the cast net. UGH!!! Disgusting!!!! I have seen so many, and a couple over 3 foot long.

I have been seeing them all over the lake too. I never looked at on close up yet, but someone told me they were a fresh water sponge..... but then 2 days ago, I saw one up close and it looked like an egg sack... size of a big grapefruit...

They are egg sacks. The first one I saw I thought was a rock, no twigs sticking out of it. I went to pick it from my net and it was slimey and squishy, and then I could see what it was. My stomach did a flip and I dropped it fast! So gross!  icon_eek icon_mad Take a sec to look and you see all the eggs. Some of what was in my net were big balls of them strung on a branch, weighed the net down something fierce.

I thought they already spawned though? they were all over the coves messing up the water, along with the carp, while i was wading the crappie spawn....

Sure do like that THUMP!

Thanks Carey. Educational and informative.
I still don't know what they are!!!   icon_lol
Bryozoans??  A Zooid?

What seems to be an individual is actually a colony of zooids (not polyps as in corals). Each zooid has whorls of delicate feeding tentacles swaying slowly in the water catching food.

Colonies form on submerged logs, twigs, and even wooden docks. Brought to the
surface, jelly blobs exude a pungent aroma that may be
linked to chemicals released by the organisms to inhibit fish predation or reduce competition for
growing space. Few other organisms are willing to grow next to the magnificent jelly blob.

That's some funky sh*%$# right thar.
That "pungent aroma" kept Kes from eating the caviar!   icon_mrgreen

Good thing though gar eggs are poison.  Don't try it.  Anyone thought if may be frog eggs?  Gar spawn or attempt to spawn in moving water and do not cluster thier eggs.  I did't read tarpon flies link, he may have settle this already.
