OK,
I need help please.  I'm normally a black bass fisherman and it's been a long time since I've been on Lavon.  It's now time to get my youngest son on the water and I'm thinking sandies and maybe crappie are the way to get started.  Who knows, I may never go back to large mouths!
Anyway, need advice.  I want to launch on Lavon Wednesday (7/28) morning and coming from Garland up 78 or 544.  I'm prepared to be there early so...
1) Where's a good place to launch early.  Where's an open ramp at 6-7AM
2) What lures should I buy.  I'm thinking 10 inch worms and DD22's probably aren't the ticket
3) Where have the fish been schooling?  Sounds like around the Island and South.
4) Any other advice, input, suggestions are appreciated

I can pick up supplies on Tuesday so any advice is greatly appreciated.  If I can get this figured out, there are about 10 boy scouts that can complete there fishing merit badge.  Seems they've had a bit of trouble catching a fish so they can clean and cook it.  Obviously they haven't been on schoolies!

Thanks in advance for any / all input.

A week ago, they seemed to be everywhere.
We found them all around the island, in the main lake SE of the island, as well as East of Collin Park.
This evening we went out, and found a few in the cove between Clear Lake and the island.
If I were going out, that is probably where I would start...But I am no expert for sure!

Good luck!

Most of the Corps ramps that charge a launch fee open at 6AM. Brockdale, Highland, Mallard, and Lavonia south are no fee ramps. As for baits, when the sandies are schooling they say you can just about throw anything at them. Some of the other posts mention roadrunners, little clios, and slabs. I am a crappie angler, and usually just throw a crappie jig at them if they get close enough to me, but I carry a few blue fox and mepps spinners with me as well.
Good luck getting them scouts their badges. 10, huh. I hope not all at the same time, lol.

Thanks for the responses.  I've had a little more time to review past posts and have an idea what lures to bring.  Basically, the same lures that used to work still do!  Hope they're schoolin on Thursday morn.  It's been years since I've been in schooling sand bass and more importantly, my youngest has never seen it.

Good fishen,

As far as a good place to launch your boat... I would say East Fork Park is a good option
for you coming from Garland... $ 3.00 launch fee and they open gates at 6.00 AM..
You have 2 ramps in the park to choose from  icon_mrgreen
When catching SandBass, it's hard to beat the Road Runner... Single hook is much better
to use instead of the treble hook lures... Most fish are gonna be small and a treble hook is
VERY hard to get out of their little mouth...

Good Luck & Be safe

CNoGood: man i cant give much better advice than what these guys have provided for you. the fish may not start schooling until later in the AM however.
some mornings i've waited up to 1 PM.  i did troll the dam area and also around the Island when they weren't schooled up and did catch a few until they blew up.

Good luck and Great Fishing!! hope you guys catch a bunch!!

Great!  You've all been very hospitable.  Now if the fish will just do the same.  Glad to hear I don't have to beat the sun but I would like to beat the heat.  Hopefully the action will be good enough the heat won't matter for a while.

I'll be in the white Champion with a couple of boys (19 and 12) that think they know it all and can't accept that dad really does!
If your out there, say hi and good luck to you.

Thanks again for the input.

Still catching 12"+ fish. Fishing 5-13 ' deep using electronics. Only thing i every use is a 1/3 oz lil cleo nickel. They can be used anyway and have the best action of any spoon to simulate an injured shad. There are some knock offs but do not perform as good. Davidp put us on them 15+ years ago and  Havent used anything since. Not sure how many but over 10000 fish have been boated in my boat since then. They are white bass candy.

Where are you getting the Little Cleo's?  Last time I was in Academy, I looked for them but couldn't find them...

Learning one step at a time

Thursday morning, the birds were feeding in mid lake. Mel took us out that direction and the fish lit up his fish finder. We caught a lot of fish and kept the best. Later we just caught a lot of yellow bass. Still a good day. It was slow starting out but once we switched 1/2 ounce spoons, the bit got constant. I was using a 1/2 ounce CC and Mel was using a yellow fished shaped spoon. Smaller seemed to be better on Thursday for both casting and jigging.

Bumping this thread up to see if anyone knows where to get the Little Cleo's... I have one or two that I have had for ever... Believe I actually picked them up in No. Ark when when I was doing some spin fishing for trout.. Anyone know where I can pick them up at? I have tried the normal places, BPS, WM, Dicks and Academy....

I've not been able to find them either, so been using slabs, spoons, little georges, and roadrunners. The slabs and roadrunners have been doing the best for me lately, slabs in silver, and the white/silver roadrunners with white maribou skirt.
