Looks like the large Chinquapin perch we used to catch in Louisiana back in the late 50's.

Definitely readear, shellcracker where I was in Florida. The world record used to be out of Merrits Mill pond (5lbs & some change) in Mariana Fl 10 miles from my brothers house. two lbs very common. Still my favorite fish to eat, even better than crappie.

Wonder if a mess of shellcrackers would impact the zebra mussels?

I use to fish that mill pond when I was stationed in Ft Walton Beach in the Air Force. It was a good drive over there but what a beautiful lake to fish. Only thing was the water was so clear, the fish could see you 100 yards away. Lots of nice fish.

That's the one, crystal clear. We would use a zebco33 mounted on a fly rod with 4lb test, use a carolina rig with a bullet head for weight & cast as far as you could. The good thing was you could see the beds from far away also & then back off of them. Sure do miss that place. Makes me want to plan a trip quick to visit my brother in Bonifay.

Fished it as a kid - have never forgetten how clear the water is.  I do not think it got any better than being able to spot a fish, cast to it, and watch it take the bait - good memories!

I haven't heard the word Chinquapin in a long time... I grew up in LA and that is what my dad called em...

I caught a bunch of big ones out of North Lakes Pond over at denton a little over a month ago, not quiet as big as that one but would have been some good eaters anyway, I think they must have been spawning, caught a bunch of big ones, then the next week I caught all blue gills, I was usin them for flat-head bait, I was fishin off the bank, but you might could get them out of a boat in the lake now!!!
