1  Tackle and Equipment / Lures and bait / Re: Catchin some shad in the cold wintertime on: December 20, 2010, 09:14:35 PM
twas a little "ruff", good thing I've got pretty good balance as I almost thru myself along with the net a couple times!--woulda been cold I'm sure, very bad indeed! the toon really handles it well though which is a good thing as I don't get to go when I want to, have to go when I can!
2  Tackle and Equipment / Lures and bait / Catchin some shad in the cold wintertime on: December 13, 2010, 07:59:46 PM
Went out for half day yesterday cause it's been too long and I had a little time. Caught my first "deep water" bait ever. Used the extra heavy 6 foot I got last year and with a little patience (means making multiple throws!!) I managed to get enough for fish'n. Tried this for the last two years without success. Tried the three foot "trawler" net that the guy I bought the toon from-- with bricks, without bricks, fast, slow, through huge pods of bait fish and never got anything. Tried the extended line for deeper depths last year without success (standard 1 lb/ foot net). Yesterday managed quite a few once we spotted some bait fish on the bottom, just have to make sure the depth is less than 30 foot so the net goes all the way down! Tried in 30 plus but no luck, worked ok in 25-28 foot. Two or three casts netted 7-10 large hookers each. Only managed three fish, but now I have some confidence that the bait CAN be caught when it's cold out--that made my day!

Your husband is definitely a HERO!! Very thankful this story had the great ending it, obviously someone was looking out for all involved on that day. I like Arborist's advice, you gotta consider the unthinkable before it happens and try to be prepared. Plan for this and then hope it never happens.

God bless your Husband! and YOU!--so glad you were both there.

Good go'in Capt'n--great that you can offer everyone a chance to catch one of our LLMs (Local Lake Monsters, tm) for a reasonable price and a short drive!! No need to go to South America or Africa to get a sore arm and a big smile--just call the Capt'n!! Good luck this year--I'm sure I'll see you on the lake. icon_razz

Wrong "Monster" Mike--I think I know the one you're talking about though. Met those guys once, I think they got a real steal on it and put in a little work to make a pretty good fish'n platform. Our's is the 18ft Bass Buggy with green top and the big green drift sock hangin off the side.

Probably see at EF though--that's my ramp!

fyi--per fishn1's post, see luvtofish's-- "catfish rig" and see bankfisher's--"bottom finder rig". We drifted for 4 hours on Monday with five poles out, fresh shad on all. The rig in the front was per luvtofish's pic and the one next to it was per bankfisher's. These two rigs caught all 7 fish we boated (4 for luvtofish and 3 for bankfisher) while we got no hookups on the other three (couple bites, but no real "takers"). These were as per luvtofish--but without the float. Make any difference? Won't say that was the only thing going on but I do think I'll make sure I got floats on this type of rig from now on. Just sayin-- I like to 'speriment too, but probably best to go with what produces.

Lots of fun!!--lots of screamin for sure! . I do all the work (drive the boat, catch the bait, bait the line, put the line out, net the fish, get the fish off) and they had all the fun!! No problem--great to get out and get these teens a taste of some REAL FUN!! I'll admit, I did have to "make sure they're on", you know set the hook and make a few cranks--"just to make sure it's not gonna get off hun". Kinda hard to hand over the 20 #'r, you know when you got something solid on the line, but this was a day for the girls so I was happy to give it up to Ashely. Spent way to much time trudgin around in the woods last year--plan on spending a lot more time on the water again this season.

Hope to see some of you on the lake--it's the "big green monster"-(toon)--stop and say howdy if you see us!!
